Cypriot teenager Charalambos Mouzouros has been linked with a bizarre transfer to English League Two side Torquay United, with internet rumours recently being confirmed by local media.

15-year-old Mouzouros, an attacking midfielder, was first linked with the Gulls on Tuesday, when the Cyprus Football Twitter account posted “Young Cypriot Charalambos Mouzouros of Anorthosis is set for a transfer to Torquay United F.C. Great move for the U17 national!”

Charalambos currently plays for Cypriot top-flight side Anorthosis

Unsurprisingly, the Anorthosis Famagusta player’s name failed to ring any bells with United supporters, whose suspicions were further aroused by the lack of information about Mouzouros on the internet. Sensing a conspiracy theory against their club, with some believing that the midfielder has been made up, one fan even said “He probably does exist – some spotty kid in his bedroom with too much time on his hands!”

However, an article published today on the This is South Devon website has added some creditability to the story, claiming that the United’s Head of Youth Geoff Harrop has contacts in Cyprus that allowed him to pluck Mouzouros from under the noses of “several leading Italian clubs”.

Should he sign youth terms at Plainmoor, Mouzouros will join compatriot and youth-team left-back Alex Avaraamides at the club. Avraamides was part of Torquay’s FA Youth Cup and regional youth league squads last season, and is also capable of playing in midfield.
